Chinese Communist Party Official Wan Sanyun Sued in Taiwan for Genocide

Since 1999, the Chinese Communist Party has been persecuting practitioners of the Falun Gong spiritual group. Officials around the country who have taken part in the persecution have been named in lawsuits overseas. In Taiwan on Monday, Falun Gong practitioners filed court proceedings against a visiting delegate who they say is guilty of genocide.

The Governor of China's eastern Anhui province is the latest communist official to be sued for his involvement in the persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice. Wan Sanyun arrived in Taiwan on Monday for an eight day visit. That same day, local Falun Gong practitioners filed a criminal complaint against him at the island's High Prosecutors Office. They are accusing Wang of genocide.

"When Wang was in Sichuan [as its Party Deputy Secretary], the persecution was at its worst. In just one year between 2001 and 2002, more than 30 Falun Gong practitioners were persecuted to death under his leadership."

In 1999, the Chinese Communist Party began a nationwide campaign to eradicate Falun Gong. The spiritual practice had grown in popularity throughout the country during previous years. To date, at least 3,427 Falun Gong practitioners are confirmed to have died in the persecution.

According to rights group, the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong, Wang initiated the "Hurricane-F" operation in 2002 while he was the deputy Party secretary of Sichuan Province. The campaign hunted down and arrested Falun Gong practitioners throughout the Province.

During his stay in Taiwan, Wang and his delegation are set to visit the southern city of Kaohsiung. One resident there says locals should be made aware of the crimes committed by visiting delegates.
