Torrential rain has caused a huge cave-in on a state highways in Shaanxi, north west China. The 26-feet deep hole has caused traffic chaos in the area.

Torrential rain washed away the roadbed of a state highway in Shaanxi Province, north west China on Monday, leaving a huge hole and paralyzing traffic.

The hole appeared in state highway 108 at the Foping section and was 50-feet long, 23-feet wide and 26-feet deep. Authorities said it was caused by last week's flooding.

[Cao Guicheng, Party Secretary]:
"The flood on July 28 hollowed the bed of the state highway at the junction of two rivers. It washed away the sand and pebbles of the road bed."

The hole was right in front of the entrance to the Dapingyu Scenic Area, one of Shaanxi Province's ten tourist attractions.

Local road workers said heavy rains have been constant in recent years, but had never caused such serious damage before.

Heavy rains pounded many parts of Shaanxi Province last week, causing economic losses of almost $50 milllion according to Shaanxi's Bureau of Civil Affairs.
