STORY: Pope Benedict XVI held a giant open-air mass on Thursday at Berlin's Olympic Stadium in front of approximately 70,000 people, according to the organizers.
The pontiff waved from his papamobile and blessed small children as he made a circle around the stadium to the cheers of the pilgrims who came from all over Germany and beyond.
German-born Benedict's sermon was set to be one of the high points of his four-day trip, his third visit to his homeland.
The stadium was built for the 1936 games, famous for the performance of black American sprinter Jesse Owens, who made a mockery of Nazi master race theories by winning gold in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay and the long jump.
