Hu Jintao Calls for Taiwan Unification on Xinhai Anniversary

Today is the 100th anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty on October 10th in 1911 and started the Republic of China. In mainland China, leaders marked the occasion at the Great Hall of the People last night. Hu Jintao used the opportunity to re-iterate the Chinese regime's calls for unification with Taiwan, the self-ruled island that still goes by the official name "The Republic of China." Taiwan has managed to hold off an invasion by Communist forces since the civil war, and relations between the two sides remain tense.

Chinese leaders mark the anniversary of the Xinhai Revolution at the Great Hall of the People. This October 10th marks 100 years since Sun Yat-sen led a nationalist uprising that toppled the Qing Dynasty in 1911. It ended over two millennia of imperial rule in China.

Although the Chinese communist regime celebrates the anniversary, they see the Xinhai Revolution as a movement that set the stage for the Communist Revolution in 1949. In that year, Communist forces defeated the Nationalist government who then fled to Taiwan. Self-ruled Taiwan, under the official name "The Republic of China," still celebrates the anniversary as its national day.

The Chinese regime regards Taiwan as its territory. Hu Jintao used the opportunity to emphasize the regime's claim to the island, using Sun Yat-sen's own words.

[Hu Jintao, Chinese Leader]:
"Mr. Sun Yat-sen once said, 'Unification is the hope of all Chinese people. With unification, the country's entire population will benefit; without unification, everybody will suffer.' Realizing unification by peaceful means best serves the fundamental interests of all Chinese people, including our Taiwan compatriots."
