Israel detains al-Jazeera reporter

Israel arrested al-Jazeera's bureau chief in Afghanistan ashe left the family home in the West Bank to return to Kabul, the network said. Samer Allawi, 47 was arrested on August 10 as he tried to leave the family's West Bank home his brother Masab said. Masab said his brother who carried a Jordanian passport had returned to visit the family in Sebastia in the West Bank for the first time in20 years. The Committee to Protect Journalists in New York issued a statement calling on Israel to clarify the legal basis for holding Allawi who they said has been detained without charges. Israel's military and security establishments refused to comment on the affair.
