And the veto of the UN resolution is causing outrage elsewhere in the world.

On Tuesday, Chinese Communist Party officials condemned attacks on its embassy in Libya.

Syrian and Libyan demonstrators hurled rocks, eggs and tomatoes at the Chinese Embassy in Tripoli on Monday, after Russia and China vetoed a UN Security Council resolution backing an Arab plan urging Syria's President Bashar al-Assad to give up power.

Demonstrators said they wanted to take down the flag of the Chinese Communist Party and replace it with the Syrian opposition's flag and the flag of Libya's National Transitional Council. That council came to power after a civil war last year that toppled and killed Muammar Gaddafi.

China has maintained a low-key role in the turmoil that has swept the Middle East and North Africa, while moving swiftly to normalize ties with the new governments that have replaced ones overthrown by popular revolts, such as in Libya.
