The European Parliament has adopted a resolution on Russia on Thursday, calling on the Russian government to respect the fundamental rights of the citizens of Russia and to ensure a fair and free presidential election on March, 4th.

The European Parliament adopted a resolution on Thursday criticizing Russia for the violations of its international obligations in the area of democracy and rule of law – mainly, during the recent elections to the national Parliament.

The European Parliament is calling on Russia to fulfill the standards of the Council of Europe and OSCE, which it is party to, in the presidential elections scheduled for March, 4th.

Russia has been experiencing a wave of large-scale public protests gathering more than 100 thousand people at a time over the past few weeks.

Protesters are calling for investigation into more than 3 thousand riggings at the parliamentary elections in December and are demanding a fair election in 2 weeks.

“Suddenly, despite the fact that we didn't expect such massive protest movements, (the) middle class in big cities just stood up and started to demand respect of their rights, constitutional rights for free and fair elections”.

The resolution, adopted in Strasbourg, also condemns Russia's irresponsibility as a member of the international community in light of the recent veto of the Security Council resolution to stop the bloodshed in Syria.

Russia is still selling arms to the Syrian regime.
