YouTube has a powerful video compression engine, there's no question of that. The problem with any video compression process is that you're essentially crunching down a video each time you do that. Nothing on YouTube could ever be truly considered lossless, but YouTube does a great job of crunching otherwise huge video files down.

If you want to maintain good video quality on YouTube, the best thing to do is make sure the file you're uploading is as clear and close to the original as possible.
