In the so-called "third leg" of the peninsula of Khalkidhiki, Northern Greece (Macedonia) is the peninsula of Athos, which, according to the Greek mythology, is associated with the fierce battle between The Olympian gods and the giants, chief among them Athos . Athos threw a massive rock against Poseidon from Thrace, but missed and the rock fell into the sea, creating the mountain to which Athos’ name was given. The area is the only self-governed part of the Greek State and today forms the center of the Orthodox Christian monasticism with national monuments of great historical, religious and cultural value on a global scale. Since 1988 it is listed as one of the World’s Cultural Heritage monuments.
