Three people were killed and five more injured as a newly-built bridge in north-eastern China collapsed.

The accident occurred when a 100-metre(328 feet) section of the Yangmingtan bridge in Harbin city collapsed, sending four trucks falling 30 metres to the ground.

The state media said the 15.4 kilometre-long (9.6 mile), eight-lane bridge opened to traffic in November 2011.

It was designed to handle 9,800 vehicles per hour.

China has experienced a number of construction accidents in recent years as the government rolls out giant infrastructure projects at breakneck speed.
