I'm Denver Lane, founder and president of Woyster Media. Welcome to Social Media Marketing Essentials for the Small Business Video #3 -- Get ready for the party.

When a small business starts their social media marketing campaigns one thing that commonly sets them back is a messy web presence. The last thing you want to do is drive traffic to an obviously unfinished site with broken links, or a blog or profile full of spam and inappropriate comments. This will leave the impression that your company is not only unprofessional, but incompetent. Keep in mind word of mouth goes a long way, so you're losing MORE than just those customers you manage to drive to your messy site.

Here are a few things to remember when setting up your online presence before you launch your marketing:

1. Have consistent branding elements in place across all your profiles, site and blog. Not only does this keep that bond of recognition growing, lack of branding elements can confuse and irritate your visitors. We'll have more about branding in future videos.

2. Don't link any pages that are obviously unfinished. Think quality not quantity.

3. Make sure your special offer and email capture instrument are not just present but prominent. By the way, the lower right hand corner of a web page gets the least amount of attention.

4. Use obvious navigation tools. If it takes more than a second or two for your visitor to figure out how to get to a page, you've already made a bad impression.

An engaging social media campaign can land your brand at the top of your local niche, but if your "house" is a mess you'll just be creating opportunities for your competition.
