A man convicted of spying for India was attacked by inmates in a Pakistan jail on Friday.

He is now in critical condition, according to his lawyer, after suffering a serious head injury.

The prisoner, Sarabjit Singh, was arrested in 1991 and sentenced to death for spying and carrying out bomb blasts that left 14 people dead.

His family says he is innocent, and his execution was stayed four years ago by ex-Pakistani president, Pervez Musharraf, after appeals from the prime minister of India.

Relations between Pakistan and India have been tense after three wars since 1947 and the casting of blame for the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

This incident could cause the already uneasy relations to become inflamed once again.
