Cambodian police are searching for a Canadian filmmaker and journalist who went missing late last week, Canadian officials said on Wednesday (February 20).

Veteran journalist and screenwriter Dave Walker was last seen at the Green Village Angkor, an upscale guesthouse in the resort town of Siem Riep. He left his room so that it could be cleaned by a housekeeper.

Walker walked out of the hotel at 2 p.m, leaving his laptop, phone, and passport in his room. Local police began their search for the 58-year-old after they were informed of his disappearance on Tuesday.

Since moving into the guesthouse four months ago, Walker had reportedly stuck to a fairly simple routine. Hotel staff noted that he would leave early in the morning, return at around noon, then leave again before coming back in the late evening.

Walker, who had been living in Cambodia for 18 months, co-founded a film company to produce documentaries tracing the lives of former Khmer Rouge officials.

"It's possible that he scared some guy," said Peter Vronsky, a friend of the Animist Farms Films co-founder, according to a report by Canada's National Post newspaper. "They're now hauling these guys into court who, for 20 years, have been walking free and giving press interviews. And suddenly now there's a whole series of trials taking place."
