A plane crashed in Red Lake, Canada on Sunday, killing five people and causing a power outage that affected hundreds of people in the area.

Seven people were onboard the Bearskin Airline plane flying from Sioux Lookout, Ontario. The aircraft crash-landed outside Red Lake Airport at 7:34 p.m, taking down six utility poles on its descent.

"When the plane hit the ground, it burst into flames," Sergeant Rob McDonough of the Ontario Provincial Police's communications centre said in a Kenora Online report. "The plane became totally engulfed in flames, and the bush fire around the plane caught fire, as well."

Two passengers survived. A 29-year-old male passenger seated at the rear of the plane climbed out of the burning wreck. After calling the police, he dragged out a 55-year-old passenger, also seated at the back of the plane. Both were hospitalised for non-life threatening injuries.

Police from the OPP Red Lake detachment, ambulances and firefighters attended to the scene. The five casualties, including the two pilots, were found only after the fire was extinguished.

The scene of the crash will be held secure until a dispatch of investigators from the Transportation Safety Board arrives on Monday, November 11.

Hydro One, the electric power provider for the area, estimates that approximately 900 of its customers around Red Lake lost power due to the crash.
